I’ve always believed that simply throwing people in jail doesn’t stop people from drinking and driving…and for someone to be arrested for their 10th DUI means that they don’t know right from wrong. A woman in Florida, Janet Landrum, has a sad DUI resume to include a 10th DUI arrest this past weekend.
It’s obvious that people with multiple DUI’s don’t have common sense. After all, people who all these DUI arrests are alcoholics and they shouldn’t just be thrown in jail. It should be mandatory that they get help. In California people arrested for drunk driving are required to attend DUI programs or classes, but oftentimes that just isn’t enough. People need one-on-one counseling to get to the root of their drinking problem. Of course, all of this counseling would require money and the government really isn’t willing to fork over the money to back this type of initiative. Instead they keep throwing people in jail which ends up costing more money in the long run.
Isn’t it time to change DUI penalties? Obviously the current laws aren’t doing anything to deter people from drinking and driving…
If you keep doing the same things, you’re going to keep getting the same results.
If you’ve been arrested for a DUI in San Diego, make sure to hire a lawyer who specializes in DUI laws and procedures.

DUI should have (NEVER) been made a crime! To (MAdd) Mothers, I am so sorry that your loved one was killed by a drunk driver. But to put men in Jail, have them being rapped, abused, beaten will (NOT) help you sleep better at night. Jail is a place for bank robbers, child molesters, rapists, killers and such. Jail is (NOT) a place for a Man or Woman who just had to much to drink. (Maybe we need to pass laws to put Mothers in jail who Slap their children, and call it (MAJOR CHILD ABUSE). Then put the Mothers in jail so they can be rapped, beaten up, abused each and every day of their lives, for making a mistake? Come on! It (IS) time to change the (DUI) laws in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA~~~~ (Sending to CNN) ~~~~~~
Eddy,
You must live in a different world, killing a person because of DUI is not a crime? no one is saying that you cant drink but when you do you should not be driving, a car is a weapon when a drunk is drving it.
I agree with Eddy, DUI should not be a crime, especially when it comes to first time offenders.
I was convicted of a DUI because I had a little too much to drink one night. The process was unbelievable. It has ruined my life. I was graduating from a well known undergraduate university, medical school bound, and after the conviction, I was treated like a third class citizen, rejected from medical school, and forced to change my career path.
Furthermore, I was accused of being an alcoholic and drug addict, even though my social drinking had not interfered with my professional life. The penalties I was forced to face after being convicted interrupted my life more than the actual act of drinking itself.
I agree, that if someone is a repeated offender, then punishment is needed to reform the person. Mothers Against Drunk Driving have made the penalties for first time offenders far too strict.
The punishment really doesn’t fit the crime, is what it all boils down to. I got a DUI a quarter mile from my house. I was just going around the block to show off my new truck to my next door neighbor. That night I was in jail. Since I WAS self employed, I NEEDED to drive to and from work, to and from warehouses, etc. That was taken away. As most people in america, I lived week to week, paying bills here and there when they came due. No license, no job. No job, No house. Ended up putting all my belongings from the house I lost into a storage unit…lost the storage unit…took on some odd jobs, handy man type jobs, to make what little money I could scrape up. Wasn’y enough for the car payments. Wife now has no way to get my 5 children to school or anywhere for that matter. Wife leaves. Of course I tried to get license back, but how can you PAY all those fines, when you’ve lost the abbility to earn money? It’s like taking away a mans drivers license for being late on child support. How the hell is he going to work and catch up on child support with no license. I think the government just comes up with whatever punishment they can think of, but not really weighing the true impact of the punishment. If a MADD mother were to come up to me and say “ALL they did was take your license away?” I would have to slap her, no really I wouldn’t know what to do. Having anger for ALL people who drink and drive because you lost someone isn’t healthy, so why is it law? That’s politics. Yes change the damn laws. It’s a ridiculous snowball effect that not too many lawmakers know much about. And as for the people getting their 3rd and 4th DUI’s. I really can’t defend them. They are different people altogether. They need mental help. Give the first time offenders a damn break!
