Do You Know How Much a DUI Really Costs?

April 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Have you ever thought about the true cost of a DUI? Did you know that a typical DUI costs an average of $10,000 after you figure in fines, attorney fees, bail, and insurance? That’s a heavy price for a night out on the town! cartoon1.gif

Well, I’m sure we don’t think about these things when we’re out partying and having fun. We think we’re invincible and these things will never happen to us! Perhaps people really do feel like they are ok to drive after having a few drinks. I know I’ve done it before. However, knowing what I know now, I never would have gotten behind the wheel.

So, if you don’t kow…here are some of the costs associated with drunk driving:

1) Bail can be anywhere from $150 – $2,500 (If you’re Paris Hilton, this is chump change)
2) Towing cost: $100 – $1,200
3) Your insurance rate can go up. Some insurance companies will even drop you if you’ve been arrested for a DUI.
4) Legal fees can cost anywhere from $2,000 – $25,000. It can be on the higher side if you want to fight the DUI charge.
5) Fines and court costs vary from state to state
6) An alcohol evaluation costs money!
7) Alcohol education and treatment
8. License reinstatement fees

Now will you think twice about getting behind the wheel after drinking?

Why Do Drivers Hit and Run?

April 15, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Whatever you do, don’t hit someone then attempt to flee the scene – especially if you’re drunk driving. A woman in San Diego did that and now she’s paying for it.

So, why do drivers hit and run? Here are some possible reasons:

- Unlicensed driver or car( such as illegal immigrant), suspended or revoked(repeat offender), uninsured
- Self preservation (secret to keep, status to protect, scared), stolen vehicle, street racing

- Aggressive driving(road rage), amorality, Age (youthful immaturity)

Did you know that nearly one in five pedestrians killed on America’s roadways involved a hit-and-run crash? Whatever way you look at it, I agree with the author of the article that our society has become desensitized to the issue. We’re so used to seeing these drunk driving stories on the news that it’s become part of the norm. The woman I mentioned above got four years and four months for fleeing the scene. Is that enough of a sentence or should the punishment have been more severe? I’ve heard of states who fine people up to $100,000 and 25 years in prison. Should more states adopt this type of punishment?

Did You Know That Unicorns Can Drive Drunk?

April 7, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Hey, did you know that unicorns exist? Moreover, did you know that unicorns drive drunk?

Check out this story about a man in Montana who told officers that a unicorn was driving when his car crashed. Now I’ve heard of excuses such as “…It was only one drink!“ but “Officer, it was the unicorn that was driving!“ is just a little off the wall! Come to find out that this man had four previous felonies, 35 misdemeanors and 53 traffic violations. If there’s one man who needs to be behind bars for a very loooong time, he is the man.

Are you making stupid excuses about why you were drunk driving!? Make sure you hire an experienced, professional San Diego DUI lawyer to help you get your facts straight!
