Officers in San Diego Crack Down on Repeat Drunk Drivers

August 27, 2006 · Leave a Comment

If you’re on a repeat drunk driving offender in San Diego, you may soon get a house visit from an officer. There’s new program to prevent repeat drunk drivers from doing it again and an eight officer unit in San Diego will be doing random house checks to make sure probationees are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. They’re targeting about 400 to 500 offenders throughout San Diego County and want to make sure these people are attending their recovery classes and not drinking alcohol.

I think that launching this program will be far more effective in preventing offenders from making the same mistake twice or three times – more so than having sobriety checkpoints. Police officers can stop them even before they get into the car, especially if they’ve been drinking heavily. This also keeps offenders on their toes because they don‘t know when they‘ll get a visit. As long as the offenders make a commitment to making a change for the better, perhaps we may see an improvement in the “statistics” of repeat drunk driving offenders in San Diego.

I’m just glad that more action is being taken to prevent drunk driving in San Diego. I recently read about Assemblyman Ray Haynes’s proposal to put red license plates with the words “DUI” to two-time offenders’ vehicles. Could an idea like this work too?

How a Breathalyzer Test Can Fail

August 25, 2006 · 1 Comment

I think that our society today relies way too much on the computer technology. We think that whatever information a computer provides that it’s the final say. This applies to breathalyzer machines also. How do we know whether or not these breathalyzer tests are always right?

Let’s pretend that I go out and have a couple beers, drive home and get stopped at a sobriety checkpoint. The officer administers a breath test on me and it shows that I have a BAC of .09. Now, in reality my blood alcohol level is .02, but for some reason it was showing .09. So, I would be arrested for a DUI because the machine showed that I had a BAC higher than the legal limit. How did this happen?

Here are some reasons why a breathalyzer test may provide inaccurate results:

1) The interference of radio frequencies – an electronic device that is close to the breathalyzer machine can interfere with the energy emitted by the machine which provides incorrect results

2) Officers fail to provide regular maintenance on the machines – any machine that doesn’t receive frequent maintenance is due to break down sooner or later

3) The officer who administers the test may not use the machine properly which can alter the test result

Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning Offers a Solution to Drinking and Driving

August 21, 2006 · Leave a Comment

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning hopes to make an impact on people about the consequences of drinking and driving. Three things the organization wants to emphasize are:

1. The possibility of killing or injuring someone, including himself

2) Long court hearings and possible jail time

3) The costs involved

This new program that was launched not too long ago hopes to sway men ages 21 -34 with commercials on TV, ads and increased patrol efforts.

“Any way we can get the message out about the seriousness of the crime of drunk driving, it’s a good thing,” Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Dave Egeler said in a statement. “I think the financial impact is a strong message.”

This is definitely one of the better solutions to deter people from drinking and driving. Everyone watches TV, so if there were more commercials emphasizing the consequences of a DUI, I think the message will eventually get through and make an impression on people. Marketing people always get us to buy things we don‘t need, so I’m sure they can think of a way to get the message out that drinking and driving is bad. It could definitely be something nice to test out in San Diego because I hardly see any TV messages like that here.

Smoking Cigarettes May Cause Lower Blood Alcohol Levels

August 11, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Being a former smoker and drinker, I realized that the more I drank, the more I smoked. Perhaps it was the other way around! However, according to a recent study, people may drink more alcohol if they’re smoking cigarettes between sips. Researchers at Texas A&M conducted a study on female adult rats and discovered that when alcohol was sent right into the rats’ stomach, the rats had lower blood alcohol levels if they were also given nicotine. When the rats were given high amounts of nicotine, the blood alcohol level in the bloodstream was 50 percent lower than if the rats did not receive nicotine.

Regardless, I hope that this information will not encourage people to continue smoking in order to keep their blood alcohol levels low. I am sure there are other studies to prove that the combination of alcohol and nicotine are hazardous to your health. One report I read said that passive smoking while drinking can lead to increased risk of cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth, and the respiratory and digestive tracts.

No matter what, smoking and drinking is a bad cycle to get into – something that should be common sense, but people still continue these habits anyways!
